Basic Wraithly Powers
Retest: Alertness
In addition to the arcanoi, there are certain basic wraithly abilities that are endemic to being one of the restless dead. Indeed, these powers are virtually manifest in all wraiths, and only the most recently dead are unable to use these powers normally. A brief description of each power follows, with explanation of how to apply each power to the game Oblivion.
Three of the four powers have the retest Alertness; the power of Insubstantiality, however, has no retest, since it normally employs no challenge. The other three powers employ static mental challenges, usually against a difficulty of the target's mental traits.
All expanded information on these powers are taken from the Wraith: Player's Guide, pages 135-137 wit the exception of the language of the dead which is from Wraith the Great War.
SHARPENED SENSES
It should be noted that all wraiths have sharpened senses. This requires no training whatsoever, and there is little way for a wraith to get around this. Storytellers may choose to introduce a new flaw, however: Lessened Senses. This flaw would reduce the wraith to normal, mortal senses and be worth 4 points.
It should also be noted that wraiths therefore all suffer from the sharpened senses. As per the first level of the vampiric discipline Auspex, wraiths who are assaulted by loud noises or bright lights run the risk of sensory overload. Storytellers who wish to determine whether or not a wraith is immobilized by the onslaught should make a simple challenge against each wraith. If the wraith wins, she is able to function normally. On a tie, she is down two traits for two rounds as her ears adjust to the ringing (or whatever "organ" was assaulted). If the wraith loses the challenge, she is incapacitated for a minute due to the barrage. Note that this power applies as well to the Keening art Crescendo, and in addition to the damage involved may incapacitate the wraith. Wraiths may retest on the simple challenge with a willpower trait only.
Hidden Sight is the ability wraiths have to notice the unusual and out of place. An adaptation of Sharpened Senses, this allows the wraith to detect supernatural creatures employing supernatural powers by noticing that which is out of place and not natural, and by picking up on subtle clues. Such powers that may be detected are Obfuscate, Obtenebration, Blur of the Milky Eye, Correspondance and Forces spheres, and even Enshroud. (Note: this is different than has been run in the past, and supercedes preceding Oblivion rules. It has been modified to conform with the Wraith: Player's Guide).
Wraiths may make an extended static mental challenge against the party in question (including other Enshrouded wraiths). Such a challenge, however, stretches the wraithly senses to their limit, and thus costs 1 pathos to employ. The defender may employ such abilities as appropriate for a retest. If the wraith wins, she detects her target. If the wraith wins a second challenge, she detects the identity of the target.
LIFESIGHT
Sense Sentiment is the ability for a wraith to detect the mood of a mortal. Ironically, this power may only be used by watching the flare of energy between two people. Thus the art may not be employed on those who are alone or not in any interaction with another. A static mental challenge is made against the target. If successful, the wraith discerns the mood of the target. Note that this may not be used as a lie detector (as per the vampiric discipline of Auspex) and will not work against a vampire or wraith. The test is considered to have automatically failed.
Passion Sense allows a wraith to detect another wraith's passion by detecting a "similar" energy wavelength as that of a mortal. This is a highly difficult challenge to make, for the wraith utilizing this art must actually catch a wraith drawing pathos from a source. If the challenge is successful, the core emotion (not the entire passion) is detected.
Spirit Sense allows a wraith to attempt to detect umbral spirits in the Middle Umbra, such as Garou, banes, and such. This art requires concentration and at least one level of Garou Lore, Umbral Lore, or Spirit Lore. Even if successful, the party so detected is still only a vague outline at best. Vampires in astral travel may be seen as well (Vampire: the Masquerade 2nd revised page 153), but again the wraith must have at least one level of vampire lore (and probably should have more than that). This can be treated as an extended challenge, with each success helping the wraith to better see her target.
DEATHSIGHT
Discern Weakness allows a wraith to detect the weakest point in a object (or opponent) in either the shadowlands or the skinlands. This art may be used to coordinate an attack, thus giving the wraith in question a greater chance of damaging a target. If the wraith succeeds in a static mental challenge, she gains an extra trait for the initial attack, and does one additional damage on the initial attack. Note that this only applies to the initial attack on an object or target, and requires at least one round of "sizing up" the target first.
Sense Health may help a wraith to discover the general well-being of a target. While this is not as fine-tuned as the innate ability of Usury, it can be helpful nonetheless for sizing up a target. If successful, mortals must state their general health level (ie. "bruised," "healthy," "wounded," or "Incapacitated"). This power does not work on wraiths. It does, however, work on vampires and risen.
Diagnostic Scan is used by wraiths to determine what actually is wrong with something broken. If the initial mental challenge is successful, the wraith in question may be considered to have one extra mental trait for the purpose of fixing a particular object. This ability may not be used to add to Usury (which has a more advanced medical scan possible) or Flux (which generally causes the problem Diagnostic Scan is used to help fix).
Creature Type
This unusual art is sort of a combination of Lifesight, Deathsight, and even Sharpened Senses. A static mental challenge is made against the target, and an aura (of sorts) or the lack thereof is determined. Based upon the aura, the following may be detected.
None - Vampires, Risen, Life-in-Death(Embody)
Pale - Ghouls, mages with Entropy or Life paradox, Grumps(fae)
Normal - Mortals, most mages, Wilder(fae), Materialize(embody)
Bright - Garou, mages high in Prime or Life, Childlings(fae)
Note that only the aura is detected. If a target has no aura, then he could be a vampire or a risen. Certain things, like true magick or true faith, may not be detected. Things like mummies or Chulorviah are generally going to show up as humans.
INSUBSTANTIALITY
All wraiths have the ability to spend a point of corpus to go insubstantial (also called incorporeal). This allows them to be unaffected by events in the skinlands, and will prevent them from being jostled into a harrowing by a crowd or run over by a truck. The amount of time a wraith may be insubstantial is for a number of minutes equal to the number of physical traits the wraith has. At best, it allows wraiths to walk through walls or "fair-escape" by falling through the floor into the basement. A few notes are in order.
The Argos ability of Phantom Wings requires that a wraith spend a point of corpus to become insubstantial, but only in the shadowlands. In the tempest, a wraith need not spend corpus to fly.
Wraiths who are insubstantial may indeed be so towards the skinlands, but are not so to other wraiths. Insubstantiality does not allow a wraith to avoid combat with her peers. Objects in the shadowlands or tempest may still affect the wraith normally if insubstantial.
Finally if a wraith wishes to fall through a floor or other barrier they must know that there is a room for them to fall into. Any space will do provided it is of sufficient volume. For example a wraith can pass through a street if they know there is a sewer below. There is no such thing as "swimming" underground, the mind just doesn't deal with the concept.
Language of the Dead
Wraiths have their own innate language which is referred to as the language of the dead. It sounds like a sort of hodgepodge of other languages put together but is in actuality something else altogether. The only other supernatural creature that may learn this language are mummies as they repeatedly go through the process of death. Indication of the use of this tongue is the same as any other language, you put your fingers up in front of your mouth that particular L-shape.
